If I harvest all of the bigger leaves and leave the majority of smaller ones on, will this adversely effect the plant or cause it to grow faster?

My practice is to leave them alone if your plant has good roots. Only time I pull leaves is when I'm trying to recover a plant that is under stress. I think it might make the plant grow faster with more leaves but with extra stress to the total system. Extra stress may cause unhappyness

if you think of the leaves as batteries and the size of the leaves, the size of the battery, then you should be able to visualize what effect removing 75% of leaves would have on the plant. like arc said, 20% at most, and when removing them i would only remove the ones with proto leaves sprouting out, this encourages those proto leaves to grow.

My Plants "Throw away" Dozens of leaves a day and I don't even bother to rake them up anymore.
I'd have to remove the webs/bugs/dirt/bird droppings from them if I wanted to smoke or give them away. Too much work!
If you look closely at this photo of "Sally" you'll see she's well draped in dead and dried leaves:

Let your plant throw them away.

speaking for seamac I think what you are seeing that is green and round is the pole that keeps those beasts up in the air and stops them from taking over and eating everyone and everything in a five block radius LOL
