One thing I cant find info on is a good mother plant size may be.  What kind of height would be good?  How many side branches should it have?

Welcome to the Forum.

Are you asking what size plant you should buy? Or are you asking how large a plant should be before you cut it?

i think it really depends how many cuttings you want because almost any sized plant you could make a cutting. i would say if you wanted a small cutting every week
the plant would be about 3 feet tall and should be vary bushy. this can be easily accomplished be toping the plant and will give you many shoots away from the
mane stem.

He's right.

I require 30 cuttings, about a foot long, each Month so I require Several MONSTER Salvia Plants ...

Gotta climb a Ladder to cut stuff off of the top now:

Big Honkin Huge Plants!

I wait until they are at LEAST 4 feet tall before I take Cuttings - but you may not be that patient ...

Sorry I didn't answer right away.  I have not been here in the forum lately.

Plants the size of mine require high light levels for over a year and lots of space for roots to grow into. I do not think you have to worry about indoor plants getting to 8 feet tall (not for two or three years anyways).

No, I guess if I were to harvest leaves I could sell a fortune's worth. But my plants know I'm not going to just walk up and pick something off of them. There is a carpet of Salvia leaves on the ground: I'm not kidding that is a literal description of it! I seldom wish to smoke it: she is just a beautiful plant to grow.

San Diego has insane light levels: the plants would burn to death in a few months if they weren't under a full tarp.

Thank you, just a regular guy, for posting that link to my old grow log. I've tried to make some illustrated tutorials: http://sageseeds.info  I hope they help.

Keep a close eye on my summer grow off contest plant. I'm using my latest techniques on her and if you want a blow by blow description of How I treat them: that's the thread to watch.
