softening of the upper stem.

i have 2 sally plants. a while ago the top part of the stem got really soft and eventually started to die.  the plant didn't make it. now its happening to my other plant. what is causing this and how do i stop it?

got pics? without it's hard to help but if your talking like bending over upon itself i've had this happen due to lack of humidity and hydrostatic pressure. if its bending over upon itself you can remove the bottom 2 leaves moving upwards by every couple hours until it stands upright showing a balance in hydrostatic pressure again (seamac's typical advice). also if your not using a humidity tent i would also give it one asap whether its a plastic bag or cut of 2 liter.

problem solved, it was the humidity and i just misted it more frequently and it hardened back up again

A suggestion to help that is also mist the inside of your humidity tent, but that occurance is not uncommon just don't let it get too out of hand or it could snap your stem. Otherwise sometimes in your acclimation to your own humidity it will happen slightly when out of the tent.

Did you have a humidity tent before, and just remove your plants? Or are these new? What changed that caused the plant to decide to be difficult? And pictures are always fun to look at.

was this a cutting?..

.otherwise limp top indicates your roots aren't pulling water.  by raising the humidity, (in these cases) you help it stay alive, but aren't addressing the "why". it went limp....IMHO

Plants can go from 100% to 50% to 20% humidity, and not even blink....when roots are pulling water.

so make sure the core root area hasn't gone static on you....(impossible to water, sink  pot in bucket of water)
