I got this sweet little thing for X-mas. Its basically a Linux laptop, but its ultra-portable; the size of a book and only 2 lbs. Pretty crazy, I didnt even know they existed. I guess its ASUS's response to those $100 laptops (one laptop per child), but instead of for students in poor developing countries it's sold to consumers in places like the US, Europe, Japan, etc. I have been playing around with it and reading about it. I figured out how to unlock the "Full Desktop Mode" because it comes with this simple "Easy Mode" crap where you are pretty limited. Have any of you guys heard of these things?

Try to get Windows 2k installed on her and really let it fly!

I've got a few online friends with them.

You think it would be faster with Windows? I think the reason its so fast is in part because its on Linux. I bet Windows would slow it down a little.

Well, W2k is the lightest windows version that I've seen to date...

It might not be faster, but a tad more useful...

go linux, always. bsd is also great, im not sure how computer savvy you are but if you can handle alot of command line interface then bsd is the most reliable system i could ever see anyone using. if you dont want to try out bsd and learn its interface, then pc bsd is excellent for beginners in the bsd world. i use linux on two of my workstations(one is for school) and the other i use to record music, (check out my bands site in my signature, or check out my old band myspace.com/deaduntilburied ) i prefer suse in easy to get around linux, but fedora, redhat and Slackware are my favs. definitely dont waste your time with windows. can you say VIRUS. im glad to see linux emerging mainstream. its always been my fav. hope you enjoy your laptop. and just to say, linux IS why the computer is fast. windows is a resource hog. linux can speed up any computer. im A+ certified and i recommend entry level linux to everyone who comes in with an old computer that is non upgradeable. and 99% percent of the time they are happy with the results they get with linux

You can't deny that there are more applications available for windows than there are for Linux distros. And, regardless, using precompiled binaries is generally easier than compiling or installing packages, and recompiling kernels. Although, I'm not sure if this is required in the Eee PC's laptops.

And before you say anything, I use everything. XP, 2k, OS X, Ubuntu and Gentoo. I'm a network admin and lead tech support at my university, so... I've seen many, many scenarios with all OS's... Wink

2k is at least the smallest, well running windows OS's, infact i ran that untill i upgraded to this vista package with a new birthday computer a while ago. anyways, the linux that comes on it will run faster, it just takes some getting used to the interface and how everything is organised. There are about the same amount of apps for both nowadays, just you have to find them/get a good distro for your distro ect, just more headache than 2k, i think is what arc was heading twards.  linux will run faster on that box if you can handle it, just cause its used to an slower hardware
(IE the old wives tale of a 500mhz linux running as well as a 1.2ghz with windows)

Yeah I'm definitely gunna stick with Linux. I probably wont go to BSD...command line, no thanks, lol. But yeah I found basically all the software I need, all freeware. The only thing I'm still looking for is a good Dreamweaver alternative. I tried NVU, but I was pretty disappointed...it seemed really buggy and it was hard to use. Does anyone know of other good, Linux alternatives?

I found this: http://kompozer.net/
Its supposed to be a version of NVU with many of the bugs fixed. Now my question is how risky it might be to install on that PC.

I swear by Kompozer: I use it to update my web page report on growing seeds.

You might also want to try Arachnophilia http://softwaresanta.com/smf/index.php/topic,878.0.html I haven't tried it yet but it's also up for "Christmas Presents" grabs. Does Xandros Have a decent JAVA 5 JVM onboard?

I found this other program I think I will use instead, Bluefish: http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/
Its sweet, very small and fast. It doesn't show you how your page will look, its all code. But it codes in tables and things for you really easily. I really like it, it even has this cool feature where you can put in PHP and HTML pre-coded snippets and make your own.
