Hey guys, I'm guessing that like me, a lot of you are into psy / chill / downbeat / ambient music? I'm just getting back into listening to Shpongle, and absolutely love their 2005 album "Nothing lasts... but nothing is lost" (a reference to the legendary mind explorer Terrence Mckenna, to whom the album is dedicated)...

Anyway, I'm now wanting to check out other artists in this sort of genre, and so far I've found "Younger Brother" which is released by the same record label. Very cool stuff so far.

Does anyone have any suggestions of similar artists? I'm trying to get some OTT, Shulman, Etheogenic and Hallucinogen...

(Also, is anyone a member of torrenttech.org? Apparently they specialize in electronic music releases, and I wouldn't mind becoming a member there, but they're invite only....)

Oh Paradoxic - if you'd prefer I didn't discuss torrent sites on your website, just let me know and I'll edit that last comment out! Smiley

I just downloaded the shpongle album "nothing lasts" to get an idea of what kind of music you're talking about. It sounds very drum & bass with cultural melodies, which is pretty cool. A lot more upbeat than I was expecting though.

Music that I can suggest for you:
Jimmy Swift Band - The Rebirth of Hooch (Awesome canadian band that tours non-stop. Their music is really driven by the base lines and consistent drumming with some soaring electric guitar, just trust me on this one, they're perfect for altered consciouses, but may be hard to find for download... let me know if you can find anything by them online, they have tons of live performances available online, but the sound quality isn't always the best)

Royksopp - Melody A.M.
Easy Star All Stars - Dubside of the Moon (laid back reggae version of darkside of the moon, really well done)
Medeski, Martin & Wood - "End of the world party" or "Out Louder" or "Combustication"
St. Germain - "Boulevard" or "Tourist" or any of the "Des pres cafe" series (1-7)
Thievery Corporation - "Cosmic Game" or "The Mirror Conspiracy"

That should be a good start...

Cool thanks for the suggestions... I've enjoyed some Royksopp and Thievery Corporation in the past, so thanks for reminding me on those too.

Yup you're right about shpongle being quite upbeat. Definitely very psy oriented, the two members of the group are into their psytrance as well under different pseudonyms, but personally I prefer to listen to slower tracks than trance these days. The sort of music that can give you energy if you want it and are in that kind of mood, but still be enjoyable if you're wanting to relax instead...

I'm really enjoying the album "The last days of gravity" by Younger Brother as well... one of the guys from Shpongle is in that too

Here's a decent live show from way back in 2003 that they did. The sound quality isn't that bad, but you might need to turn the volume up a little more than normal to hear it well enough:  http://www.archive.org/details/jsb2003-01-21.shnf
I might recommend you listen to the songs Astronauts, Warm and Fuzzy Feeling, Now They Will Know (40 minute long live version of an 18 minute song  Shocked ) and 80's Runway Model. All very cool songs if you settle down and really take it in.

This is all the live performances they have on Internet Archive sorted by date.
