oh yeah also, arch, when u said you grew the plants of yours under redlight, was it a strait red bulb? was it 24/7ect did it promote faster growth, ect, mabey more bushie growth or more vertical growth?arrrgggg ima pirate

No, the bulb was an array of 120 red LED's. 20/7. Much faster growth, but stalkier growth.

Red light promotes height and blue light promotes bushiness.

Pirate? Lol.

The average 10000MCD blue LED puts out about 3 lumens.

You'll need 600 of them before you get to the level required for good plant growth.

Our Red LED arrays used 80000MCD 10mm HED LEDs which draw 0.5w each!

Interesting idea.  I wonder if I should use skewers to aerate the original soil 1.5" around the base.  When I transplanted from the pots received by sea mac, I forgot to loosen the roots and have left them as-was.  I wonder if that will bite them in the long run or if it even matters.
I'm glad you didn't screw with their root balls, 5010.

It minimizes root shock from shipping and transplantation.

And what he said is true: they started spreading out their roots as soon as they got the extra space. The roots shall run into walls again soon. It was nice while it lasted ...

Thanks for the tip about the straws. [Genius +] for that ...

Say! Do you think the fellow you gave that rare plant away to would send a cutting? I'll be glad to ship him cuttings of "Aquarian" and "Moon Maiden" when they get big enough.  Salvia divinorum Genetic exchange program!
Thats a good idea, we should start a sticky topic for that. Good name: genetic exchange program Cool  I wanna get in on some of that too.

Yeah: I've been thinking about "The Project" for a while now.

I Might have 4 or 5 different strains going in my Garden soon: maybe next year the plants will be big enough to take cuttings of. I have 3 different strains going right now. (2 of them VERY Rare.)

One of these strains is starting up blooming already.

Sweet, by then we should also get a good article going that compares all the strains.

Well since you have a good variety of strains I think you'd be good to start and manage the topic, are you up for it?  Cool

Yep!

I Sure AM!

I feel it's my life work.

But not this morning. I'm shipping those 3 plants I promised Mstryshovel to Illinois today: because of the fact that they become illegal in 2 months and we need to establish a secret beach head in the state. They are ready to go: and time is of the essence in getting them there.

I'm doing EVERYTHING I can to spread this plant far and wide. My Plants are from fine stock / MY plants have my "Sequence Codes" and their manufacturing date and times written on the pots for quality assurance / I won't ship a sick plant / I securely ship 3 plants (for Double redundancy backups) at a time / in 'breaking resistant' multi-layered shock cushioned Express mail packaging (I developed myself) / by the fastest and best tracked "Overnight" mail the USPS offers (Signature Required for delivery). People get a photo of the plants before shipping, and a USPS Express mail tracking number BY Email from me when they are shipped - they can compare the 'shipping photo' to what arrived to see if any damage occurred in transit.

Sure, it costs a little more. And it takes a lot more time and care and love. But nothing is too good for my babies. And the people that got them agreed with me: I take the greatest care of anyone in shipping these rare precious sacred plants.

(I am SO totally disgusted by the frequent reports from other people of Plants purchased on "eBay" or other venues that were sickly poor excuses for plants (Many not even potted and growing already!) that were trashed in shipping and died soon afterwards. That'd be enough to put ME off of growing Salvia. But my conscious would EAT ME Alive if I did that kind of crap: I wouldn't be able to look at myself in the mirror ... )

Re-pot MINE and they GROW: It's that Simple. It SHOULD be that simple from ANYONE. But I'm a freak and a throwback to simpler more honest times.

I would not be ashamed for ANYONE that got a "Instant Garden Kit" from me to start a grow log here. In fact: I encourage it. That way I get to SEE my babies grow up, Too!

I will email Mr. Siebert about this.

I'll bet he has the WHOLE Collection - every one in the set (except Arcy's strain) already - having been caring for these plants about 30 years longer than me.  At any rate, I think he would approve of multiple dedicated gardeners (in multiple states AND Countries) attempting to keep as many strains going as a 'genetic insurance bank' for this sacred sage.

We all feel this extreme measure is an Idea whose time has come given the potential for legal bans and ignorance attempting to wipe this plant out, right?

Happy Gardening, ALL!

on the topic of light, would it work to lets say, cover your bulbs with a sheet of colored saran wrap( or lightgels)? like blue for instance to give the plants that shift in blue light , or, on another thread, covering the backwall of my grow area(its currently a white wal) with said, colored sheets to shift the reflected light and give it that little extra kick?would any of these things theoreticaly work? i plan on doing something like this anyways but just would like some thoughts on it

If you want to subject your plants to only a single colour of light, this is a fine idea... But you don't want to change the colours of the back-wall other than white... To improve efficiency of light reflection, I suggest tin-foil and aluminum tape... That nets you about 20% extra light exposure.

On a side note, my Salvia clones are growing *incredibly* well! They're shooting outwards rather than up. Each of the nodes have developed FOUR new leaves since the last pics!!! Pics will be uploaded this sunday Smiley

Week 2 Out of Incubation

Well, these little guys are growing up so quickly that I figured I'd post some updated pictures!

First off, a general view of the buggers (I use that term endearingly) . The dropped leaf to the side was put there by me... Nutrient cycling and all...

Note all the lateral branching... These guys are pushing out *a lot* of lateral growth for their third week of life. See below:

The aerial roots have died away, but in their place: new stemmage!

A little bit about my setup... I've got 2 32w CFL daylight deluxe bulbs pointed directly at them. The second one is shielded with cardboard and tinfoil to reduce loss of light. You can also see my hermit crab tank, auto-waterer, and 3 of the parent plants.

One of the parent plants was actually growing a tiny shoot from the pot... It put out about 5 leaves since it started growing roughly 4 months ago... I just HAD to root it and give it a fair chance at survival!

A picture of the light required to get the parents to stay as healthy as they do... 30w of Grow lights (wall mounted) and 40w CFL warm-light bulb in the middle.

And last, but not least, the drying rack I made up for my salvia leaves... On top of my computer radiator  Cheesy

That's it for this week!

(go easy on my photobucket bandwidth please :p)
(Note: Seamac, this shoot is from the plant that I'm about to give away, a genetic copy of the one that was produced via seed... So, I can easily get you a clipping when the weather in Canada becomes more tollerable!)

Mid-Week 3 Update.

Well, I had a substantial demand for Salvia clones this week (5 people wanting plants, all of which were referred here Wink) so I had to take a lot of cuttings!

Next, a new (awesomely-themed) grow-tub. Promote recycling!!! (Actually, it was the cheapest 20L tub in the store...)

You can also see about an inch of new growth on the previous clones... In 3 days...

Poor parent plants that sacrificed about 5 branches...

Thanks for referring customers  Grin I didn't know you sold plants, do you do it through eBay?

Heh, the green things are just pieces of painters tape... Green was, erm... Fitting for the cause, so I used it :p

I hate selling things through ebay, because of all the fraud, lack of proper communication and poor traders. Instead, I use craigslist where I can generally speak or meet the customers face to face.

I refer all American friends/customers to your web store... And I sell clones exclusively to local Canadian customers (and refer them to this forum to learn and contribute).
