Took my indoor plant out for a feeding and watering.. Also wanted to see a side by side of the two plants.. One grown outdoors and the other inside.. The difference in leaf color and growth are shown.. So far I am thinking these plants prefer the be grown outside.. I am not going to take clones or leaves from either until this winter..

[Genius +]

Look at those 2 side by side!

You got them the same time and treated them both the same Except you left one outside in the semi-shade, right?

Boy, that picture says a lot! The outside grow one is, what, 4 times bigger? 5?

By the way: that outdoor plant told me she is Happy there.

IF there is NO light pollution where she is She will Bloom for you!

That outdoor plant will be big enough to give you a few ripe seeds by December/January. If you don't have her near a window or under a streetlight/porch light/security light that is on all night you'll probably notice the first signs of Racemes forming by November.

Jupe calls them "Cathedral Heads" and when you first see one you will wonder what your plant is doing.

I see she has enough mass to properly bloom for you. I expect you to be one of the lucky outdoor growers with a big enough plant to set seeds this year.

Is she 2 feet above dirt level yet? She looks like she is!

Pretty much says it all.  the trick for indoor growers is to get basically, a very high level of light, but without the attendant heat and dryness which lights bring.  Even flouros can heat up a space too much.

Healthy strong quick growing plants, also a very pest resistant, and if problems occur, they can often grow the problems.

Sun right now in in the Northern Hemisphere is almost perfect for outdoor growing, with shade screen or shady spots.  Full sun is still abit much, but my entire patch is getting 1 hour at midday, which last year hurt it, but this things are "different".....

Peoples take those plants out for a walk around the block. Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

I have some stick cuttings in dirt, no roots..... which I have doing this too, rather then letting them rest in the shade, been putting them in FULL MIDDAY SUN for 5 minutes at a day.....man its like they are squirming green!!!!
I am very tempted to pull them up and look and see if roots are forming....(no no don't do it...OK I won't)....as they stems are so fat, and little nubbins of nodes are swelling.......

I have maybe 4-6 spikes started, about 2 inches long, I'll post them in an appropriate thread. Tallest plants first, for whatever reason...and the ones in the most sun....shady section is lagging....

Hey Sea Mac.. Thanks for all the info and kind words.. The outside plant is actually two weeks older than the indoor one but looked so bad at first that I thought she was done for.. She picked herself up and took off while I was spending all my time arranging lights and boxs and moisture levels.. I managed to disconnect the light where she is when I first put her out there as I wanted as natural an environment as I could make.. At first I was really worried about the sun but she is diggin it so I have just let her do her thing.. I have only fed her once using your suggestion and that was just a few days ago so I am looking forward to seeing how she likes it.. I would be incredibly happy if she bloomed and will keep an eye out for the Cathedral Heads.. I'll have to measure her tomorrow and check for size but I believe she is more than two feet above soil.. I feel very lucky to have her doing this well..

Thanks for all the info and tips.

I suggest you read my (slightly outdated) guide to growing seeds:

http://members.cox.net/sageseeds/

Here's what you are looking for:

It looks weird - like a pine cone ...

When you see this you know your plant is getting enough (12 hours) of really DARK night to follow her instincts and go ahead and bloom for you. The Flowers are tasty like tiny apples and smell like honeysuckle blossoms.

I hope you get several stalks!

By the way: did your outdoor plant turn Dark Emerald Green yet? Usually I notice that rich healthy color come back into their faces within a week of feeding them Miracle-Gro ....

Bitey-Crawlers!

Get some "Bt" Caterpillar Killer

They'll eat that plant up otherwise!

Disaster strikes..!

Last week we had strong winds here in LA.. I was worried about them falling over but most of my outdoor plants were alright.. I thought things were all clear when today I went to water and three full stalks of my salvia were on the ground..! As I am standing in shock a neighbor walks out and said Oh sorry about your plants my dog ran into them and sorta chewed on some.! I'm going to plant them tonight in soil and need to pick up some rooting hormone. ANY tips or advise would be great. These are outside plants and I want to keep them outside, so im not bringing them in. The mother plant is in bad shape but will make it. Lost most of the leaves on one side and it just looks like a 100lb puppy ran it over and chewed on it.

I'll get some photos up as soon as I get the plants taken care of.

Here's a tip/advice. . . start kicking puppies. Maybe do a JARG bubbler? You could always root in your house and re-aclimatize outside. You may end up with 3X as many plants. It sucks that happened though. Was your neighbor nice about it?
