My Graduation Project (anyone want to help?)
«

Well, I'm starting my graduation project for my highschool. The topic of my project will be: "The effects of holistic medicine versus conventional medicine". The project requires an essential question, 5-7 page long paper in MLA format, a mentor, a presentation, a product, and a reflection letter. I currently have an alternative medicine garden that I have been working on for some time now (including Salvia D, Calea Zacatechichi, Morning Glories, Rivea Corymbosa, Wild Dagga, California Poppy, Prickly Poppy, Tooth-Ache Plant, and Wild Lettuce). Would anyone like to help in some way (possibly experience reports, your own grow-logs, etc.), and wouldn't mind me citing you as a resource?
I have also contacted a local pharmacist that is apparently an herbologist, I am hoping that he would be willing to be a mentor for my studies.
Thanks!

So are you planning to actually test these herbal medicines. There could be some liability issues with that, did your school really say that was ok?
Also I would suggest that you narrow down your project to maybe just one herb, even that will be a challenge for a project.
This is definitely a very interesting field for me and I would be happy to help out if theres anything I can offer.

If you are going to report on Salvia divinorum I have a large stock photo bank of Salvia photos, and a grow log or two, and will lend my name to your study ... for what it's worth.
PS the Name is Carl McCall but everyone refers to me by my Initials C. Mc. (Sea Mac) Nyuk-nyuk-nyuk!
And my current avatar here is a Motion GIF, I made myself, of an Anna's Hummingbird up to her nostrils in a Salvia divinorum flower: a sight rarely witnessed!

I would love to grow 4 of these: Wild Dagga, California Poppy, Prickly Poppy, Tooth-Ache Plant, and Wild Lettuce.
What is Tooth-Ache Plant?
I'll pay postage if you get any seeds from your plants or have any leftover.

The advisers for this project said that it is acceptable, as long as it contains all legal plants. I agree on narrowing the subject down to just one conventional medicine, and an herb that produces near the same effects.
I'm not sure if I could work Salvia D into this project though, considering that it's only known as a hallucinogen, not a treatment of any kind.

Tooth Ache plant (Spilanthes acmella or Acmella oleracea), is a plant that contains a chemical called Spilanthol. It is found all over the plant (the highest concentration being in the flower buds). To achieve the effects, you can take a few leaves and chew them, and it will produce a numbing sensation in your mouth, similar to that of benzocaine or other local anesthetics. It is very good for soothing cold sores, and the like. Also it is a natural antibiotic, and activates the salivary glands, which helps cure other ailments and assists in digestion.
I'd be happy to give you some seeds if you would like. Or, you have any kind of interesting plant seeds, I would be willing to trade some of mine for yours.

So you're actually allowed to have people try out the herbs for your study? It would be awesome to test Salvia for relieving headaches/migraines...I've read many reports of people finding tremendous relief from migraines and headaches with Salvia.

The only problem with using Salvia D. in my report is that there is barely any information given about it curing headaches/migranes, or any other ailments. I may be able to use it with other plants as well, comparing and contrasting the effects/results versus that of conventional medicines. That would seem to be very time consuming, and I would have to conduct my own experience reports on friends and whatnot as well for my product. Otherwise I could possibly just use the product to show how herbal medicine is grown and prepared, whilst using grow logs and experience reports for my paper.

I've dropped the topic of holistic medicine due to liability. I thought about it, and basically it could take one person to say that they are "concerned" that I have intent to sell the plants as drugs to another student at my school. Since schools don't work based off of legal proceedings, then all the evidence they would need is that I have the plants, and I could get suspended or possibly expelled.
Anyways, so I've changed my topic to "The effects of hydroponics on commercial crops". Basically I'll tell how it increases the yields, compare it to soil growing, and tell how it could be used to help starving people in third world countries. For the product I'm going to make a simple hydroponics set up (I'm thinking of using the 2 litre bottle bubbler method), and create a grow log.
If anyone would like to contribute in any way, or stumbles upon a book or article that is related to hydroponics I'd be very grateful.

What is a reflection letter? I've always hated these sorts of projects in which you are required to make some buggedyboo that's not actually a normal requirement of any sort of project in the professional or academic world. I guess the reflection letter is basically a summary of your findings and a recommendation of what worked better?

Yes: there IS a method to my madness! But I prefer people just think I'm mad ...
They discount me as a madman: then suddenly I'm sane and in their face before they can re-evaluate the threat level ...
What a sneak I am ...
The Other level to my user name is: I was in the navy and I've ALWAYS Used a Macintosh!
My current Macintosh is the MA970LL/A Mac Pro:
