Put code snippets as text?

Sometimes I want to explain how to add a link or an image to a post and I haven't been able to... the [pre ][/pre] tags don't seem to do it, and even when I put [img ] in a post just now, it inserted http:// where I didn't want it... is there a tag that does this?  Oh, and when I previewed this post it didn't stick the http:// in it.. selective little bugger!

Yes the 3rd button from the right in the lower row that looks like this # is the insert code button.
