I introduced a couple friends to salvia recently and we've all gotten really interested in trying the quid method sometime over the summer before we're all back off to school. I thought about getting a plant just for this reason (well not completely) but would 2-3 months be anywhere near enough time to harvest enough leaves for three people? I haven't got a clue how fast salvia grows but it seems like this might be a little too much to expect of it.

If that doesn't work out, does anyone know of somewhere online where I could order leaves that have not been dried? I feel like I've looked around quite a bit and I haven't found anything. I tried the quid method when I first bought some dried leaves last fall, and it was the texture of the dried leaves, not the taste, that made me have to spit the whole thing out after less than ten minutes (yes I soaked them in water but it was still really bad).

Anyway, any help here would be appreciated.

I've never heard of anyone selling fresh leaves.
I don't think it would be very practical either.

If you get a rooted cutting, you definately won't get it.
DEFINATELY won't.

It takes over a year for alot of people to even be able to make cuttings, or pinch their plants to get very many leaves.

But, there is a site that sells fully grown plants.
And you can get them in packs (like 3 blossers for $80 and such)

I almost bought from them, but I had $30, and this site had a buy 1 cutting get 1 free, with free shipping, so I bought here!

Oh, sorry, the site is livesalviaplants.com.

According to them, the plants are "very bushy" with several branches, with many nodes.

Good luck on enlightenment!

Alright, thanks. That's what I was expecting to hear, but I figured I would ask anyway as different plants grow at different speeds. I'm thinking maybe I'll just get the bigger of the rooted plants from here, and that's still buy one get one free so it's cheaper than the livesalviaplants site. Quidding will have to wait, which is no big deal, but I'll see if I can get a start on things soon.

On another note, is there anyone here from the northern part of the US or Canada that could tell me about their experience growing salvia. I live in Minnesota and I'm a little worried about how these plants will do come winter, though they would be staying inside of course Tongue. It gets pretty dry here and I would be leaving them with my brother while I'm at school, I wouldn't want it to be a huge amount of work for him just to keep them alive.

I got a small cutting, pampered it, then pinched it to hell.

I was able to get 27 cuttings from it alone in the span of 6 months, plus about 1g of dried leaf (3g fresh) a week.

It was under 100w of 6500k CFL light, 16 hours a day.

However, it took the plant 3 months to get to that state...

I almost wish I was still growing, I'd have no problems sending you 10-20g of fresh leaf in a plastic baggie. Maybe PM Seamac. If you've seen his garden, you KNOW he's got some to spare Smiley.

You're in luck: I made 14 baby plants yesterday (24 hours ago) and there is a Half pound (225 grams) of fresh leaves in the refrigerator right now that I don't feel like chewing up this week.

(I'll post a photo later this evening ... )

225 Grams is About enough for 3 people ... It would take you a year or two to get your plants this big:

and harvest that many leaves - so you can PM me if you're interested.

In the fridge they can last a while ...

Right you are Arcy: your suggestion is right on! [Genius +]

Here's your chance ...

As I ramp up my Production line for full scale "A Plant a Day" operation I'll start offering the rare treat of FRESHLY Harvested Salvia Leaves at more regular intervals. Suffice it to say no one else has these on a price list anywhere that I know of!

FRESH! RAW! Unwashed! Petioles aligned to the same direction (as is traditional). Wrapped in foil like a flattened football and rushed to your door for best texture. (Like Bitter Spinach)

In the plastic grocery sack they total 226.2 grams ...

Any bidders? Winner pays postage ...

If SD isn't(currently) illegal where you live a variant of the MJ cultivator's "Sea of Green" method will produce the volume you need to supply multiple uses within the time frame your climate allows.
