Where did you hear that? I am pretty sure it is still growing strong and some websites import their salvia leaves from Oaxaca directly.

Well Salvia is thought to be a cultigen, which means that it has not been found to exist in the wild. It has only been found to grow on what are clearly human tended plantations. This is why many people believe Salvia is some kind of hybrid species.
